Prentice has joined the HeX team from John Flamsteed Community School, in Derbyshire. During his work experience placement he’ll be learning all about digital accessibility!
Hi, I am Prentice Reek. I’m a Year 10 student, doing work experience with HeX Productions.
I am a self-proclaimed nerd, interested in computers and history. I watch Star Wars, Marvel, and I have even seen some Critical Role.
Why did you choose HeX for your work experience?
The reason I came to do work experience with HeX is because I aspire for a career somewhere in the tech industry. I thought working at HeX Productions would give me a look down one of the many pathways this industry has to offer.
What does your average day consist of?
My average day is sleeping in, usually until 10:00 at weekends, skipping breakfast to tend to my hobbies and homework. After lunch, I often go for a walk and after dinner is movie watching time or more homework. Then I go to sleep and do it all again.
What’s your favourite part of school?
The best part by far are my computing lessons, which I wish I had more of, when getting a coding task and building a solution on my own that works really well. Every time, I have completed a coding task on my own, I immediately I get a hit of dopamine.
Who do you admire?
I have a personal admiration for Bob Ross with his calm attitude all the time, this is because I sometimes have a problem with my temper. His general calmness is something I am envious of.
What is something few people know about you?
I used to want to pursue drama or acting, but bad teachers and self-doubt dissuaded me from dedicating myself to it. I used to look forward to every lesson, but my teachers arguably petty feedback made me dislike the entire subject.
What toppings would you choose on a pizza?
I enjoy pepperoni and cheese. I have tried other toppings, but it seems I am a simple man with simple tastes of pepperoni and cheese.
What are your top three pet peeves?
- Easy wilful ignorance, this gets on my nerves – when you give a thorough argument of an idea to someone and they choose to stay with their original opinion.
- Slow internet is something everyone can relate to, clicking a link 4-5 times then opening 4-5 of that thing.
- Correction of grammar/punctuation – I get annoyed by this because it highlights all the little inaccuracies of my writing, which makes me feel like I can’t do anything.
If you could be anywhere, where would you be?
If I could go/live somewhere else it would probably be Canada, because I prefer the cold over the heat of summers. I can speak two of the prominent Canadian languages English and French. Also, I have family there that I would love to meet.
Do you have a Personal Motto?
“If you hit your head against any brick wall hard enough it shall crumble.”
– Prentice Reek
I resonate with the sentiment of every problem has a solution and I like the comical nature of the Motto. I feel it expresses that anything is achievable with enough effort. I got the idea for this Motto when my computing teacher said “For coding, some of you got it and the others hit their heads against a brick wall until they did”.
